Step by step

How installments are worked out

  1. Estimate your annual tax

Your projected total income tax liability for the year.

  2. Subtract what's already paid

Any tax already withheld or paid reduces what's left to pay quarterly.

  3. Choose your taxpayer type

Individuals pay by the 15th; companies and AOPs by the 25th (Section 147(5) and (5A)).

  4. See each installment

The remaining tax split evenly across four quarters.

The dates matter more than the split

Dividing the year's tax into four is the easy part. What this is really for is the deadlines: Section 147 requires the tax to arrive during the year it relates to, not when the return is filed.

Miss an installment and the liability does not simply roll forward. Default surcharge runs on the unpaid amount from the date it fell due, so a payment made late is worth less than the same payment made on time, and the gap widens the longer it sits.

The default surcharge calculator shows what that delay costs.

Tax already withheld counts

Advance tax is not paid on top of what has already been collected from you. Deductions made during the year — on salary, on bank profit, on contracts, on imports — reduce what remains payable by installment. Overlooking them is the most common reason a business pays more advance tax than it needed to and waits a year for the difference.

Where this stops

Whether you are required to pay by installments at all depends on your turnover and your last assessed position, and the due dates differ between companies and individuals. This works out the schedule once you know you are in it; it does not decide whether you are.

FAQs

Advance tax installment FAQs

What is Section 147 advance tax?

Section 147 requires certain taxpayers to pay their estimated annual income tax in four quarterly installments during the tax year, rather than as one lump sum after filing.

Who must pay in installments?

Every company and AOP, and any individual whose latest assessed taxable income (excluding salary, dividend, property and certain final-tax income) is Rs 1,000,000 or more — Section 147(1) and (2). The quarterly amount is the latest assessed tax scaled by turnover, less tax already collected in the quarter.

Why do companies and individuals have different due dates?

Section 147(5) gives individuals the 15th of September, December, March and June. Section 147(5A) gives companies and associations of persons the 25th of September, December and March, with the June quarter due on 15 June for everyone. An AOP therefore follows the company dates, not the individual ones.

What if I've already had tax withheld during the year?

Subtract any tax already paid or withheld from your estimated annual liability first — this calculator splits only the net remaining amount across the four installments.
