Crypto Tax Calculator
Pakistan has no separate crypto tax rate. What it has is a taxable gain — measured in rupees, so both exchange rates matter. This works out that gain properly, then applies the rate you are actually subject to.

Where crypto actually sits in Pakistani tax law
There is no schedule of crypto rates to look up, and any calculator that shows you one has made it up. What the law gives you instead is a set of ordinary questions:
- Is it capital gain or business income? An occasional investor disposing of a long-held position is on different ground from someone trading daily. Frequency, intention, borrowing and organisation all point one way or the other, and the head of income decides the rate.
- The fixed securities rates do not apply. Those percentages belong to listed shares and specified instruments under their own regime. Borrowing one for a token is a mistake, not a shortcut.
- The gain is a rupee gain. Bought at one exchange rate, sold at another: that movement is part of the taxable figure whether or not the coin price changed.
- Not taxed and not declarable are separate. An unrealised holding is not a disposal, but assets can still belong in your wealth statement, and foreign-held assets carry their own reporting.
The regulatory picture — banking-channel restrictions, then legislation to license virtual asset providers — has changed more than once and is a compliance question, not a tax one. If a profit is real, it is income regardless.
Step by step
How the gain is worked out
Cost in rupees
Quantity × purchase price, converted at the exchange rate on the purchase date, plus buying fees.
Proceeds in rupees
Quantity × sale price at the sale date's exchange rate, less selling and withdrawal fees.
Gain is the difference
Proceeds minus cost. Currency movement is inside that figure, and is broken out separately above.
Apply your own rate
Marginal slab rate for an individual, company rate for a company — whichever your head of income makes correct.
Reading the result
The gain is in rupees, so the rupee moved too
This is the part almost every informal calculation misses. Your gain is measured in rupees between two dates, so the rupee exchange rate on each date is part of the answer — not just the coin price.
A position that was flat in dollar terms can still show a rupee gain if the rupee weakened between purchase and sale. That gain is real for tax purposes even though the holding did nothing.
Every disposal is an event, not just cashing out
Selling for rupees is obvious. Less obvious: swapping one coin for another, or spending crypto on something, is also a disposal of the thing you gave up. Traders who move between coins dozens of times and assume nothing is taxable until they withdraw to a bank account have a long list of events they have not recorded.
Records are the real difficulty
Exchanges close, accounts get locked, and export histories disappear. Download the transaction history periodically rather than assuming it will be there when you need it — with dates, amounts, the coin price and the rupee rate used. Reconstructing years of activity after the fact is the part that goes wrong.
Where this stops
This computes the rupee gain on one disposal from figures you supply. Pakistan has no separate crypto rate, so which rate applies to that gain depends on your circumstances and how the activity is characterised — occasional investment and organised trading are not the same thing. The regulatory position has also moved, and that is separate from the tax question.
FAQs
Crypto tax FAQs
Is crypto taxable in Pakistan?
A profit on disposing of a virtual asset is income, and income is taxable unless something exempts it. What does not exist is a special crypto rate: the securities regime with its own fixed percentages applies to listed shares and specified instruments, not to virtual assets. So a gain is generally taxed either as a capital gain or, if you trade frequently and systematically, as business income at your normal rates. This calculator therefore asks for your rate instead of inventing one.
Which rate should I enter?
The rate you are actually subject to. If the gain is business income for you, that is your slab or company rate. If it is a capital gain taxed at normal rates, it is the marginal rate the gain lands in once added to your other income — work that out with the Income Tax Calculator and enter the marginal figure. Never assume one of the fixed securities percentages applies; they do not.
Why does the calculator ask for two exchange rates?
Because the gain is measured in rupees, not dollars. If you bought when the rupee was at one level and sold at another, the currency movement is part of your rupee gain even if the coin price never moved. Using a single rate for both legs quietly hides that — one of the most common ways a crypto gain gets under-reported.
Can I deduct exchange and network fees?
Costs of acquisition and of making the disposal are part of the calculation: buying fees add to your cost, selling and withdrawal fees reduce your proceeds. Both are handled separately above because they sit on opposite sides of the computation. Keep the statements — a fee you cannot evidence is a fee you cannot claim.
What about a loss?
A loss is shown as a loss here and attracts no tax, but do not assume it shelters other income. Set-off and carry-forward of capital losses are restricted, and the treatment differs depending on whether your activity is investment or trading. Get the head of income settled before relying on a loss.
Do I have to declare holdings I never sold?
Holding is not a disposal, so an unrealised gain is not taxed. Assets and foreign-held wealth can still be reportable in your wealth statement, and a resident individual with foreign assets has separate obligations. Not taxable and not declarable are different questions.
Is trading crypto legal in Pakistan?
The regulatory position has been moving — restrictions on banking channels, followed by legislation to bring virtual assets under a licensing regime. That is a compliance question separate from tax, and this calculator takes no view on it. What is clear is that illegality would not make a profit untaxed.
Is this good enough to file with?
It gives you a correct rupee gain for one disposal and the tax at a rate you supply. A real return needs every disposal for the year, a consistent cost basis across multiple purchase lots, and a decision on the head of income. For anything beyond a handful of trades, take the figures to a tax advisor.
