How this is worked out

  1. Choose Qurbani or Aqiqah

Each has its own share/goat-count rules.

  2. For Qurbani, pick the animal

Goat/sheep is 1 share; cow/buffalo/camel splits up to 7 ways.

  3. For Aqiqah, pick the baby's gender

Common practice is 2 goats for a boy, 1 for a girl.

  4. Enter the price

Shares, and who each one is for

A goat or sheep counts as one share and stands for one person. A cow, buffalo or camel carries seven shares, which is why families and neighbours commonly buy a large animal together.

The shares in one large animal do not have to belong to one household. What matters is that each share is a full share — seven people, not eight sharing informally, because a part-share does not satisfy the obligation for anyone.

Qurbani and aqiqah are different occasions

Qurbani falls in the days of Eid al-Adha and is tied to that time. Aqiqah is for the birth of a child and is traditionally done on the seventh day, with the commonly cited practice of two animals for a boy and one for a girl. They are not interchangeable, and one animal generally cannot serve both intentions.

What the cost actually covers

The animal price quoted at the mandi is rarely the final figure. Transport, feed for the days before Eid, the butcher's fee and disposal of remains all add to it. Budgeting only the purchase price is how people end up short on the day.

Where this stops

This works out shares and totals from prices you supply. It cannot tell you whether an animal meets the conditions of age and soundness, and that is what decides whether the qurbani is valid at all — check the animal, not just the price.

FAQs

Qurbani & Aqiqah FAQs

How many shares can I take in a Qurbani animal?

A goat or sheep covers one Qurbani only — no sharing. A cow, buffalo or camel can be shared by up to 7 people, with each share counting as a full, independent Qurbani.

How many goats are needed for Aqiqah?

Common Sunnah practice is two goats/sheep for a boy and one for a girl. One goat is also considered acceptable for either if two aren't affordable — confirm with a scholar for your specific case.

Is Qurbani obligatory?

Views differ by school: some (including the Hanafi view followed widely in Pakistan) hold it is obligatory (wajib) on those who meet a Zakat-like wealth threshold and aren't travelling; others consider it a strongly recommended Sunnah. Confirm your personal obligation with a scholar.

Can Qurbani or Aqiqah replace my Zakat?

No — Qurbani and Aqiqah are separate acts of worship from Zakat and cannot substitute for it, even if the cost is similar.
