Step by step

How your freelance tax is worked out

  1. Enter your receipts

Total export earnings received via Payoneer, Wise, wire transfer or platform payout.

  2. Choose your rate

PSEB-registered exporters use 0.25%; others typically use the 1% standard rate.

  3. See your final tax

Calculated once, with no further slab-based tax on this income.

  4. Plan your quarter

Use the quarterly figure to set aside funds as receipts come in.

Good to know

Freelance export tax essentials

PSEB registration pays off

The gap between 0.25% and 1% is significant at any meaningful income — registration is usually worth the effort.

Keep encashment certificates

Your bank's certificate for each remittance is your proof of foreign exchange receipts for FBR.

How the money arrives decides how it is taxed

The concessionary treatment for exported services depends on the receipt coming into Pakistan through proper banking channels, with the bank's encashment documentation to prove it. The same work, paid the same amount, can be taxed quite differently depending on the route the money took.

Money brought in informally, or held indefinitely in an overseas wallet and drawn down as needed, is the version that causes problems later — not because the work was different, but because the evidence is.

Keep the paperwork as it happens

What you want on file is the bank credit advice for each receipt, the client contract or platform agreement, and the invoice. Assembling that at filing time from a year of Payoneer and Wise statements is possible but unpleasant, and gaps are hard to reconstruct once the year has closed.

A low rate is not the same as no filing

The attraction of the export regime is the rate. It does not remove the obligation to file a return and, where applicable, a wealth statement. Freelancers who pay the tax and skip the return still face late-filing consequences, and stay off the Active Taxpayer List — which then costs them on every unrelated transaction for the year.

Where this stops

This applies a rate to receipts you enter. Whether your particular services fall within the regime, and whether registration is required in your case, are questions worth settling before the year rather than after it.

FAQs

Freelancer tax FAQs

Who is this calculator for?

Freelancers and remote workers receiving payment through Payoneer, Wise, direct bank wire, or platforms like Upwork and Fiverr for IT, software, design or consulting services exported from Pakistan.

What tax rate applies to freelance export income?

IT/ITeS export receipts can qualify for a reduced final tax rate — commonly 0.25% if registered with PSEB, or 1% as a standard turnover-tax rate without registration. Both are available here, plus a custom rate field.

Do I pay this quarterly or annually?

Advance tax on export proceeds is typically encashed/deducted per remittance by your bank, with adjustments at filing. This calculator also shows a simple quarterly figure to help you budget.

What records should I keep?

Bank encashment certificates for every remittance received are essential — they document the foreign exchange proceeds and any tax already withheld, and are required to support your annual return.
