Reading the result

The same salary, taxed differently each year

Holding income constant is the point of this. It strips out raises and shows only what the slabs did, which is the honest way to answer "has my tax actually gone up".

Two things move the number between years: the band boundaries and the rates inside them. A year where the boundaries stayed put while prices rose is a real increase in the tax burden even though no rate changed, because a salary that merely kept pace with inflation crossed into a higher band.

Comparing years is not the same as choosing one

Your tax year is fixed by when the income arose, not by which schedule suits you. This is a tool for understanding what happened, and for arguments about whether a raise keeps up — not for selecting a basis.

Slabs are only part of the bill

The comparison runs the slabs, and where a surcharge applied in a given year it is shown separately. What it deliberately leaves out are the credits and allowances that apply to your particular position. Two people on identical salaries in the same year can owe different tax once those are counted.

Where this stops

Each year's figures come from that year's schedule as enacted. Where a year was amended partway through, the schedule shown is the one in the data for that year — useful for comparison, not a substitute for the assessment for an old year you are actually filing.

FAQs

Tax year comparison FAQs

Why does tax on the same income change between years?

Each Finance Act can redraw the slab bands, change the rate in each band, alter the base tax carried into a band, or add and remove surcharges. So an unchanged salary can attract a very different tax bill from one tax year to the next.

What is the surcharge column?

Some tax years applied an extra surcharge calculated as a percentage of tax once income passed a threshold — for example a 9% salary surcharge above Rs 10 million. Where the year had one and your income is above its threshold, the surcharge portion is shown separately and is already included in that year's total tax.

Why are fewer years listed for business income?

The slab dataset carries 13 years of salaried slabs and 8 years of non-salaried slabs. Years without published bracket data in the dataset are skipped rather than estimated.

Does this account for allowances, credits or final-tax income?

No — enter your taxable income after allowances and deductions. Tax credits (e.g. Section 62) and income under a final tax regime are not modelled here, so use this to compare slab burden across years, not as a filing figure.
