Reading the result
Tola, gram, and the karat in between
One tola is about 11.664 grams, which is why converting a quoted per-tola rate to grams by dividing by twelve gives a number slightly out. Over a heavy piece that small error is real money.
Karat then adjusts for purity: 24-karat is pure, 22-karat about 91.6% gold, 21-karat 87.5%. A quoted 22-karat rate already reflects that, so applying a purity adjustment to a rate that includes one double-counts it.
The shop price is not the metal price
What a jeweller charges adds making charges, and often a margin on top of the association rate. When you sell back, making charges are not returned — you are paid for metal. That spread between buying and selling is the single biggest cost of holding gold as jewellery rather than as bullion or a certificate.
Which rate to use
For Zakat, the figure you want is what the metal would fetch today, not what you paid. For insurance or a valuation, the replacement figure including making charges is the relevant one. Same gold, different question, different number.
For the Zakat calculation itself, use the Zakat on gold and silver calculator.
Where this stops
Rates move daily and differ between cities. Use the current figure from your local jewellers' association or a dealer you trust, rather than a number remembered from last week.
FAQs
Gold rate FAQs
How many grams is one tola?
One tola is 11.6638038 grams — the standard used in Pakistan's gold market. A troy ounce, the unit international gold prices are quoted in, is 31.1034768 grams, so one troy ounce is about 2.6666 tola.
Why does karat change the value?
Karat measures purity. 24K is treated as pure gold; 22K is 22 parts gold in 24, or about 91.67%; 21K is 87.5% and 18K is 75%. Only the pure gold content carries the gold price, so 10 grams of 22K jewellery holds about 9.17 grams of gold.
Why isn't the gold price pre-filled?
Gold moves daily with the international price and the rupee, so a hardcoded figure would be wrong almost immediately. Enter the rate you were quoted — the calculator works out the pure-gold price per gram from it, whatever unit and purity your quote was in.
Is jewellery worth the gold value?
No — the gold content is only part of it. Jewellers add making charges and often deduct for wastage on resale, so what you receive when selling is typically below the raw gold value shown here. Stones and other metals are not gold and are excluded.
Do I owe zakat on my gold?
Gold is zakatable, at 2.5% of its value once your total zakatable wealth is at or above nisab — the zakat figure above is shown for convenience. Per the majority Hanafi view, zakat applies to jewellery whether or not it is worn. See the Zakat on Gold & Silver Calculator for the full treatment.
