Punjab Pension Calculator

Total pensionable pay, gross pension, the 35% commutation lump sum and the medical allowance, built from the Punjab Police official calculator — the only one any Punjab department publishes. Pick your department to see where the gazetted line falls and which allowances count.

Your running basic pay in the Punjab pay scale.
Other pensionable payOnly pay that counts as emoluments. Leave a box empty if the post does not carry it.
Attached to the post, not the person.
Paid for a prescribed qualification or course.
BPS 20 and above.
Granted to the individual, usually to protect pay on a move.
The official page offers whole years from 10 to 30 only. Ten years is the minimum that earns a pension; thirty is the cap, at which the formula pays 70% of pay.
Picks the commutation factor — the number of years of pension you are paid for up front.
The Punjab Police calculator has not been updated since the 2018 increase, so on its own it understates a pension drawn today.

This is the complete increase list on the Punjab Police page. It carries no 2010, 2012, 2013 or 2014 increase, and it has not been updated since 2018 — so for anyone retiring now it understates the pension badly. The increases after 2018 are therefore entered by hand below rather than assumed.

The pension formula does not change from one Punjab department to the next — the Punjab Civil Servants Pension Rules apply across the provincial government, and only Punjab Police publishes its own calculator. What the department genuinely changes is which allowances a post carries into the pensionable pay, and where the gazetted line falls. That is what the selector above sets. If your department has issued its own notification, it overrides everything here.

Step by step

How a Punjab pension is worked out

  1. Total pensionable pay

Basic pay plus special pay, qualification pay, senior post allowance and personal pay. Allowances that are not pensionable stay out.

  2. Gross pension

Pensionable pay multiplied by qualifying service, times seven over three hundred. Thirty years is the cap and earns 70% of pay.

  3. Commutation

A fixed 35% of the gross is commuted. That monthly amount times twelve, times your age factor, is the lump sum. The other 65% is your net pension.

  4. Increases and medical

The 2011 to 2018 increases compound on the net pension. The medical allowance is 20% of the net for a gazetted officer or 25% if not, plus a further 25% of that allowance.

Reading the result

Department matters more than people expect

Two Punjab government retirees on the same last pay can end up with different figures, because the allowances that count as pensionable emoluments are not identical across departments. Police, education and civil secretariat service each carry their own pay structure, and what is treated as pensionable within it differs.

That is why this asks which department rather than taking last basic pay alone. Entering the wrong one produces a plausible number that will not match the Pension Payment Order.

Commutation is a trade, not a bonus

The lump sum is not extra money. You are selling part of your monthly pension for a number of years in exchange for cash now, and the monthly figure stays reduced until the commuted portion restores.

Whether that is a good trade depends on things a calculator cannot weigh: whether you have an immediate use for the capital that earns more than the pension you gave up, your health and family history, and whether you would actually invest the lump sum or spend it. Someone clearing a debt at a high rate is in a different position from someone who will leave it in a savings account.

Medical allowance sits outside the commutation arithmetic

Medical allowance is paid alongside the pension but is not part of the amount you commute. Including it in the base overstates both the lump sum and the reduction — it continues in full regardless of the commutation option you take.

Where this stops

This works from the Punjab structure recorded here. The District Accounts Officer or the Accountant General Punjab holds your service record, and the figure they sanction governs. Where your department applies a particular allowance differently, their computation is the one that counts.

FAQs

Punjab Pension Calculator FAQs

Does the pension formula change from one Punjab department to another?

No. The Punjab Civil Servants Pension Rules run across the provincial government, so a police inspector and a school teacher on the same pensionable pay and the same length of service draw the same pension. What the department changes is which allowances a post carries into pensionable pay, and where the gazetted line falls for the medical allowance. Only Punjab Police publishes a calculator of its own, and it is the source used here.

Why does the official Punjab Police calculator stop at the 2018 increase?

Because it has not been updated since. Its increase list runs 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 and then ends. For anyone retiring now that leaves out seven years of increases and understates the pension by more than half, which is why this page lets you add the later years yourself instead of quietly pretending they do not exist.

Which pay counts towards the pension?

Basic pay plus special pay, qualification pay, senior post allowance and personal pay, added together as total pay. Allowances that are not pensionable — conveyance, house rent, the health professional allowance and so on — stay out of it.

How is the gross pension worked out?

Total pensionable pay multiplied by qualifying service, times seven over three hundred. Thirty years of service is the cap and pays 70% of pay. Ten years is the minimum that earns a pension at all.

Can I commute less than 35%?

The Punjab Police calculator does not let you — it fixes commutation at 35% of gross and pays the other 65% as the monthly net pension, which is the maximum the rules allow. If you commute less, your monthly pension is higher and the lump sum smaller than this page shows.

How is the commutation lump sum calculated?

The commuted 35% is a monthly figure. It is multiplied by twelve and then by an age factor — the number of years of pension bought out, which falls from about 40.5 years at age 20 to 12.37 at age 60. Retiring older buys fewer years, so the same pension yields a smaller lump sum.

What is the medical allowance and how much is it?

Twenty per cent of the net pension for a gazetted officer and twenty-five per cent for a non-gazetted official, then a further twenty-five per cent of that allowance under the 2015 increase. Punjab works this off the net pension before any annual increase, which is a real difference from the federal calculator — AGPR works it off the post-2010 total.

Am I gazetted or non-gazetted?

It is set by the post, not only by the pay scale, though BPS 16 and above is the usual rule of thumb. In the police, constable through inspector are non-gazetted and DSP and above are gazetted. The toggle is editable because the boundary is not identical in every department.

Are the increases after 2018 in this calculator official?

No, and they are labelled that way. They are blank unless you fill them in. You can load the federal percentages as a starting point, but Punjab Finance notifies its own pension increase each year — it has historically matched the federal rate rather than being bound to it. Use your own department notification where you have it.

Is this the figure I will actually be paid?

It is an estimate. The Pension Payment Order issued by your Accountant General office governs, and it will account for anything this page cannot see — a break in service, a leave-without-pay spell, a departmental penalty, or a later notification. Treat this as a check on that figure, not a replacement for it.
