Registration advance tax is not the annual token tax
Two different payments get called "token tax" in conversation, and they go to different authorities.
- Section 231B advance income tax is federal, collected at registration or transfer, and adjustable against your income tax.
- Annual token tax is provincial, paid every year through the Excise and Taxation Department to keep the vehicle on the road, and is not income tax at all.
Paying one does not discharge the other, and only the first ever comes back to you.
Engine capacity, not price
The bands work on engine capacity, so a modest older car with a large engine can attract more than a newer, more expensive small-engine one. For electric vehicles the measure is battery capacity rather than displacement, which puts them on a different footing entirely.
Why the amounts are entered rather than fixed
These figures are revised by Finance Act and by provincial notification, and a stale number here would be quoted back as though it were current. Take the amount from the Excise and Taxation schedule for your province, or from the challan itself.
Where this stops
This is the advance tax at registration or transfer. It does not include the registration fee, number plate charges, or withholding that may apply on the purchase of the vehicle itself.
FAQs
Vehicle registration advance tax FAQs
What is Section 231B?
Section 231B is advance tax collected at the time of registration or transfer of a motor vehicle — typically by the registering authority or, for new locally manufactured vehicles, the manufacturer at the time of sale. Rates are banded by engine capacity, with a higher amount for non-filers.
Why do I need to enter the tax amount myself?
The Section 231B charge is set by engine capacity and is revised by Finance Act and SRO, so hardcoding a table would go stale. For orientation, the FBR withholding card for Tax Year 2026-2027 runs from 0.5% of value at the smallest engine sizes up to 12% at the largest, with the amount trebled for a person not on the Active Taxpayers' List under the Tenth Schedule. Take the figure from your registration authority or the current card and enter it here.
Is this the same as the annual token tax?
No — Section 231B is a one-off federal advance tax collected at registration or transfer. Annual token tax is a separate, recurring provincial levy collected by your province's Excise & Taxation department, and its amount varies by province.
Does this advance tax reduce my final tax bill?
Generally, yes — like other advance and withholding taxes, amounts collected under Section 231B are adjustable against your final income tax liability for the year.
