Land Area Converter

Convert marla, kanal, square feet, acre and murabba — with both marla standards used in Pakistan.

Marla standard
272.25 is the revenue standard (8 kanal = 1 acre). 225 is the convention in many housing societies — a 21% difference, so check which your plot is quoted in.

A marla is not one size in Pakistan

This is the conversion that causes real disputes. The older revenue standard puts a marla at roughly 272 square feet; the standard used across most modern housing schemes puts it at 225. On a 10-marla plot that is a difference of about 470 square feet — a room.

Both are in current use. Older revenue records, inherited agricultural land and some cantonment areas tend to follow the larger figure, while DHA, Bahria and most private schemes quote the smaller one. Neither is wrong; they are different conventions, which is why this converter asks which you mean instead of picking for you.

Check the standard before comparing two plots

Comparing a "10 marla" plot in an old settlement against a "10 marla" plot in a new scheme without checking the standard compares two different areas. When price is quoted per marla, the same rupee figure can represent meaningfully different land.

Kanal, acre and murabba

Twenty marla make a kanal, and eight kanal make an acre. A murabba is the agricultural unit of twenty-five acres, still the ordinary way of talking about farmland in Punjab and Sindh even where records are kept in acres.

Where this stops

This converts units. It does not tell you the area of your plot — that comes from the site plan or the mutation record, and where the documents and the physical boundary disagree it is a matter for a surveyor, not arithmetic.

FAQs

Land area FAQs

How many square feet is one marla?

Two figures are both genuinely in use in Pakistan. The traditional revenue standard is 272.25 sq ft (30.25 sq yd), under which 1 kanal = 5,445 sq ft and 8 kanal = 1 acre exactly. Many housing societies instead use a 225 sq ft marla, under which 1 kanal = 4,500 sq ft. The difference is about 21%, so always confirm which standard a plot is quoted in before comparing prices.

How many marla are in a kanal?

Twenty, under both standards. What changes is the size of each marla, and therefore the kanal — 5,445 sq ft on the revenue standard versus 4,500 sq ft on the society standard.

How many kanal are in an acre?

Eight, on the 272.25 sq ft standard: 8 × 5,445 = 43,560 sq ft, which is exactly one acre. On the 225 sq ft society standard the kanal does not divide an acre evenly, which is why that standard is best treated as a local plot convention rather than a land-measurement unit.

What is a murabba?

A murabba (also called a square) is 25 acres — a unit from the canal-colony land settlements, still used for agricultural land in Punjab. One murabba is 1,089,000 sq ft, or 200 kanal on the revenue standard.

Does plot size affect my property tax?

Provincial property tax is generally assessed on annual rental value rather than raw area, though area and location feed into the valuation tables. Federal transaction taxes are charged on value, not size. See the Property Tax Calculator and Section 7E Calculator for those.
