CGPA Calculator
Semester GPA, cumulative CGPA and the average you still need, on the grading scale and formulas in HEC’s own policy guidelines. GPA is weighted by credit hours, not an average of grades — and every grade point here is editable, because universities vary.

Your university’s grade points differ? Edit them
| Grade | HEC marks | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| A | 85 and above | |
| A- | 80–84 | |
| B+ | 75–79 | |
| B | 71–74 | |
| B- | 68–70 | |
| C+ | 64–67 | |
| C | 61–63 | |
| C- | 58–60 | |
| D+ | 54–57 | |
| D | 50–53 | |
| F | Below 50 |
HEC recommends this scale; it does not impose it. Universities set their own grading policy and many differ, both in the grade points and in the marks bands behind them. Every grade point on this page is editable for that reason. Your transcript governs.
Course by course
Where the grade points come from
| # | Credit hours | Grade | Grade points | Credit hours × points |

GPA = sum over the courses in the semester of (course credit hours x grade point earned), divided by total semester credit hours.
CGPA = sum over all courses taken in all semesters of (course credit hours x grade point earned), divided by the total credit hours taken in all semesters.
Annual system
Converting annual-system marks
| Grade | Grade points | Marks in the annual system |
|---|---|---|
| A | 3.66–4 | 70% and above |
| B | 2.66–3.65 | 55–69% |
| C | 1.66–2.65 | 45–54% |
| D | 1.0–1.65 | 33–44% |
| F | 0 | Less than 33%, fail |
For students who took their degree under the annual system rather than the semester system. Ranges may be split further to reflect incremental grade points.

Later semesters move the CGPA less
Each semester is weighted by its credit hours against everything already completed. In the first year a single strong semester moves the cumulative figure a long way; by the seventh, the same semester barely shifts it.
That is worth knowing early, because it is the opposite of how students usually plan. The semesters where effort changes the final number most are the ones where the number seems least important.
Repeating a course does not always replace the grade
Universities differ: some replace the original grade, some average the attempts, some count both in the credit hours. Which policy applies decides whether a repeat helps as much as you expect, and it is in the academic regulations rather than anywhere obvious.
Check before relying on a repeat to lift a CGPA to a threshold.
Thresholds are usually hard lines
Eligibility for MS and MPhil admission, scholarships, assistantships and honours lists is normally a fixed CGPA with no rounding in your favour. A 2.99 is below 3.00. The target planner is most useful when there is a specific line you need to clear and enough semesters left to clear it.
Where this stops
This uses the scale you set. Percentage equivalence for a foreign application is decided by that institution or by the evaluating body, and they do not all convert the same way — HEC's own attestation and equivalence process is the reference for that.
FAQs
CGPA Calculator FAQs
Is GPA just the average of my grades?
No, and this is the mistake that costs marks. Section 14 of the HEC guidelines weights each grade by its credit hours: the sum of (credit hours x grade point) divided by total credit hours. A 4.00 in a one-credit lab does not cancel a 2.00 in a four-credit course, because the four-credit course carries four times the weight.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA covers one semester. CGPA covers every course you have taken across all semesters, on the same weighted formula. That is why this page asks for your credit hours so far as well as your CGPA so far: without the credit hours, an earlier CGPA cannot be weighted correctly against the new semester.
Why does my A- show 3.66 and not 3.67 or 3.5?
Because HEC's own table says 3.66. Several widely used grade calculators publish 3.5 for A- and 1.33 for D+, where the HEC guidelines read 3.66 and 1.30. Your university may use either. Every grade point on this page is editable for exactly that reason, and the result card tells you when you are on edited values rather than the HEC defaults.
How does CGPA convert to a percentage?
By HEC's note on the grading table, you are given the minimum of the corresponding percentage band, not an interpolated figure. A CGPA of 3.00 falls in the B band, which runs 71-74, so it converts to 71%. This page follows that rule, which is why the percentage moves in steps rather than smoothly.
What CGPA do I need to graduate?
The HEC guidelines set the minimum qualifying CGPA at 2.00 for BS and undergraduate degrees and 2.50 for MS and MPhil. The result card tracks both and tells you how far short you are if you are below.
Can the target planner tell me a goal is impossible?
Yes, and it will. If reaching your target would need a grade point average above the top of the scale, it says the target is out of reach and names the figure it would take. Clamping that to 4.00 and showing "you need a 4.00" would tell you a goal is reachable when it is not.
My university uses relative grading. Does this work?
The arithmetic is the same either way, because relative grading changes which letter you are awarded, not how the letter converts into a GPA. Enter the letters your transcript shows. If your institution also uses different grade points, edit the scale.
I studied under the annual system. How do my marks convert?
The HEC guidelines carry a separate conversion for that, reproduced below the calculator: A is 3.66 to 4 for 70% and above, B is 2.66 to 3.65 for 55-69%, C is 1.66 to 2.65 for 45-54%, D is 1.0 to 1.65 for 33-44%, and below 33% is a fail. HEC notes that those ranges may be split further to reflect incremental grade points.
Does a repeated course count twice?
That depends on your university's repeat policy, which HEC leaves to the institution. Some replace the earlier grade, some average the two, some count both attempts in the credit hours. Enter whichever the transcript reflects.
Is this the figure my transcript will show?
It is what the formula produces from what you entered. Rounding conventions, repeat policy and any grade your department is still holding can move it. The transcript governs.
